Minimum wages increase

With effect from 1 April 2012, the minimum wage applicable to forestry workers will increase by 11.8%, to R1 428.70 per month. Details below:

The Department of Labour has given notice that the minimum wage for forestry workers will be aligned with the minimum wage applicable to agriculture workers over the three-year wage cycle beginning in April 2012.

In year one of the new cycle (commencing 1 April 2012), the forestry wage will be 95% of that of the agricultural minimum of R1 503.90 per month, in year two, 98% and in year three, 100%.

With effect from 1 March 2012, the minimum wage applicable to agricultural workers will increase by 8.5%.

Forestry SA's Roger Godsmark reports that employers can apply to the Department of Labour for a temporary exemption from these new rates should they be able to prove to the Department's satisfaction that they cannot afford them.
